Detailed Description

Accumulator for an ordinary weighted linear least-squares paraboloid through points.

This is Popinet's generalised height function and Basilisk's height_curvature_fit, with one deliberate restriction: the points come only from the 3 x 3 patches of the three directions, i.e. from cells at offsets (+/-1, +/-1, +/-3), so the whole tier stays inside the colour field's g = 3 halo. Basilisk gathers heights over the 3^3 neighbourhood instead, which needs colour at +/-4 and therefore a wider halo — see the DEVIATION note in the file header.

Why it is a real tier and the direction cascade alone is not: measured, tier 2a fires on 0.00-0.06 % of the interfacial cells of a sphere, because the direction with the largest |n_d| is by construction the one whose columns are most likely to close, so when it fails the other two almost always fail too. Tier 2b fails only when fewer than six of the 27 columns close, which is a genuinely different and much rarer condition.
